Social Security , Institutional Settings , and Labor Supply 1

چکیده
We analyze crosscountry panel data to examine the effect of changes in the social security systems on the labor supply of men over 50 years of age. Our findings indicate that the labor supply of older men rises with the social security eligibility age, increased pension rates for later retirement, and the defined contribution replacement rate. However their participation rate falls with increases in the replacement rates in defined benefit systems and is lower if there is an early retirement option. Overall, our results imply that a switch from a defined benefit system with an early retirement option to a defined contribution system with a high age for pension eligibility (and full reward for delayed retirement) will lead to large and permanent increases in labor force participation rates of males aged 50 and older.

Labor-force participation patterns of older self-employed workers.
Self-employed persons work in a less constrained environment than do most wage-and-salary employees. Generally they are not subject to compulsory retirement nor are they affected by institutional rules concerning labor supply. Data from the 1969 and 1971 interviews of the Retirement History Study show that the labor supply and retirement patterns of the self-employed are distinct from those of ...
متن کاملMyopia and the Effects of Social Security and Capital Taxation on Labor Supply
Myopia is increasingly believed to be a significant determinant of behavior and also plays a central role in justifications for social security and policies toward the taxation of capital. It is important, however, to account for labor supply effects, particularly in light of the preexisting distortion due to labor income taxation. For example, might even actuarially fair social security have t...

A set of studies conducted over the last 15 years has produced a near consensus that the Social Security Disability Insurance system (SSDI) has substantial disincentive effects on the labor supply of near elderly males, diminishing labor force participation, increasing the sensitivity of labor force exit decisions to adverse economic shocks, and encouraging those nearing retirement to claim dis...
متن کاملThe Effect of the Social Security Earnings Test on Male Labor Supply New Evidence from Survey and Administrative Data
Despite numerous empirical studies, there is surprisingly little agreement about whether the Social Security earnings test affects male labor supply. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the labor supply effects of the earnings test using longitudinal administrative earnings data and more commonly used survey data. We find that the response to the earnings test in survey data i...
متن کاملWelfare for the elderly: the effects of SSI on pre-retirement labor supply
This paper studies pre-eligibility-age labor market disincentives created by the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Asset and income limits might induce individuals nearing the eligibility age to work less. We exploit states’ supplementation of federal SSI benefits to estimate the effects of SSI on pre-retirement labor supply, using SIPP data. We find some evidence that generous SSI be...
